Asthma

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our school is part of an innovative project looking to improve the respiratory health of pupils. The project involves a pupil and parent review with a respiratory pharmacist in the school. The pharmacist will have read-write access to the GP surgery records during this review.

The reviews will be carried out by Dave Edwards, who is a specialist prescriber in respiratory conditions. Dave is working closely with the local GPs and the secondary care clinicians.

The GP’s have asked Dave to see all pupils who have a diagnosis of asthma, anyone who has frequent antibiotics, oral steroids or A&E visits for chest symptoms and all who have a blue inhaler prescribed. He is also happy to see anyone who wants to see him. The age range is 3 to 11.

The aim is to ensure very child gets to enjoy a full childhood without their chest limiting their participation in any activities through improving the management of their respiratory condition, be this viral induced wheeze, frequent chest infections or asthma.

The reviews will take place on Tuesday 10th September, during the afternoon. Each session will take about 45 minutes and will concentrate on

– Confirming a diagnosis (where possible)

– Education for parent and pupil

– Action and use of medication

– Inhaler technique

Every pupils will be followed up by Dave in school 6 to 8 weeks later.

Every pupil will be issued with a worsening symptom management plan, the school will also get a copy of the plan.

The local GPs are funding this project and would like all pupils affected by their chest to attend for a review.

Dave will also be holding a session for parents discussing common childhood respiratory illnesses during which he will explain the action and use of medication, good inhaler technique, what good control looks like and the importance of having a worsening symptom management plan.

Please contact Mrs Millward for more details and to book an appointment with Dave.

If attending a review please bring all your child’s medication, including spacers, to the appointment.

Kind regards.
